3 Simple Strategies for More Organized Closets

3.31.2019

If you’re looking for a way to boost your home organization, one good place to start is with your closets. When your closets are organized, you will have a tidy haven you can enjoy that can also help spur your momentum to clean the rest of your home.

Our team here at Modular Closets knows how important closet organization can be for your lifestyle. An organized closet not only creates a beautiful space to display your wardrobe and get dressed every day, but it also makes it simpler to find your desired items and quickly return them to a designated spot once you’re done with them.

If you’re looking for some easy-to-implement and effective strategies to organize your closets, consider these 3 ideas:

1. Space Matters

When organizing your closet, you want to use your space wisely.

For example, it’s smart to put the clothing you wear most often within easy reach and at eye level, so you can access it quickly. Special occasion or out-of-season items can be stored away in boxes in hard to reach spots or maybe even in a separate room.

It also makes sense to organize your drawers and shelves according to how you get dressed every day. For example, undergarments could be in a top drawer, followed by shirts and tops, followed by pants, with shoes placed beneath.

Don’t forget to go through your wardrobe periodically – ideally once per season – and donate or sell any items you don’t use anymore. Not only will you help eliminate clutter, but you’ll also make space for any new wardrobe items you may want to buy.

2. Know When to Fold and When to Hang

One important consideration when organizing your wardrobe is to decide what you will hang on hanging rods and what you will fold and store on shelves or in drawers.

Many people find that their drawers are overstuffed while their hanging rods are sparse, or vice versa. If you know that you have lots of work clothes to hang but not much leisure wear to fold in drawers, or vice versa, you will know how your closet ought to be set up. Maybe you should add shelving where your hanging rods are if you need more of that kind of organization. Or maybe you’ll want to incorporate baskets on your open shelves so that they function more like closed drawers.

Perhaps you’ve been hanging items that could be folded or folding items that could be hung up -- by switching up your routine you’ll make better use of the closet space you have.

3. Coordinate Your Accessories

Once you know where and how you will sort your main wardrobe items, it’s time to figure out how your accessories fit in with the mix.

Sometimes people like to invest in racks to hang their belt, ties, scarves, etc. Or, you may find you prefer to coil up these items and store them in compartmentalized drawers. Hosiery and other delicate items can be stored in plastic bags to keep them from snagging or tearing. Purses can be hung up or stored flat – if you have open shelves you may want to display your special occasion bags like a department store, filling them with tissue paper so they look full and decorative.

If you’ve done all the work and still have questions or would like some expert advice on a closet system that works for your home, you can reach out to our team here at Modular Closets.
