3 Simple Tips to Keep Your Custom Closet Looking Beautiful All Year Long

1.11.2019

Some people create New Year’s resolutions to finally get their closets clean and organized.  However, sometimes the real challenge is not cleaning out your closet, but keeping it organized and beautiful for the long term. In order to get the full value out of your custom closet, you need to know how to take care of it.  Luckily, it doesn’t have to be hard!

The simple truth is: curating a quality wardrobe and organizing it properly is a long-term commitment, but with the right pieces in place, it’s a commitment that can easily be maintained with just a few minutes of attention every day. They key is knowing what to focus on.  Here at Modular Closets, we not only help homeowners create gorgeous DIY plywood closets systems, we also love to help people keep their closets functional and beautiful for years to come.

Here are 3 simple tips that can help you make sure your custom closet is a true dream closet throughout all of 2019:

1. Use Quality Hangers

If you want to keep you closet and your clothes looking beautiful, make sure you’re using quality hangers.

Yes, those thin wire hangers from the dry cleaners may be free, but they won’t support the weight of your clothes and are likely to stretch out the neck and shoulder areas of your clothes over time.  Further, they cheapen the visual appearance of your closet as a whole.

Luckily, there are a variety of other hanger options available!  If you’re looking for the most affordable solution, try plastic tube hangers.  Just be sure to choose ones with notches that can hold delicate or silky items.  Wooden hangers or slimline hangers with a velvet finish are more expensive, but they can last for years and add a timeless quality appeal to your closet.

Pro Tip: use just one kind of quality hanger for your entire closet for a classy designer look.

2. Be Careful About What You Fold and What You Hang

How you store your clothes can have a major impact on their longevity.  Some clothes should be hung on hangers while other items will last longer if they are folded and stored on shelves.

Woolen dress pants, dresses, suits, jackets. and most dress shirts should probably by hung up, just be sure the hangers don’t extend past the shoulder areas of the shirt or you may create unflattering fabric bumps. That said, delicate blouses or tops with an off-the-shoulder design or details around the shoulders are probably better off folded and stored on an open shelf or in a drawer.

Other items that should definitely be folded include t-shirts and knit tops.  These can lose their shape if stored on a hanger, so it’s better to keep them neatly folded. To keep your closet looking beautiful, you’ll want to use the same folding method, especially for items that are displayed on open shelves.
