5 Quick Tips for More Efficient Closet Organization

5 Quick Tips for More Efficient Closet Organization

Have you been procrastinating on getting your closet organized? For many people, it’s easy to let closet organization slip to the bottom of the to-do list – after all, it is one part of your home that guests rarely get to see.

Luckily, it can be easy to make some significant improvements to your closet without spending too much time or effort. And the benefits can be enormous, everything from reduced stress to a more joyful day-to-day routine. Think of it as an exercise in self-care!

If you’re looking to make major strides in your closet organization in just a little time, our team here at Modular Closets has compiled these 5 quick tips to help you get started:

1. Group Like with Like

Want to make it simpler to quickly find what you own and see new outfit possibilities? Start by grouping similar clothing items together.

You can start with “major categories,” such as separating blouses, pants, skirts, and dresses into their own groupings. Once that’s done, you may find you have momentum to keep going and create subcategories by season, color, fabric, or whatever makes most sense for your particular wardrobe.

Hopefully this makes it easier (and more fun!) not only to combine together new outfits each morning, but also to know what you should buy next time you go out clothes shopping.

2. Put Everyday Items in Easy Reach

As you’re creating groupings for your wardrobe, consider this distinction: everyday wear vs. special occasion items.

In order to maximize your daily efficiency, you want to keep your everyday wear in the places where it will be most accessible. Maybe this means using open shelves for t-shirts and jeans and keeping your favorite work clothes hanging at the entrance of your closet.

You might even want to divide up your wardrobe into different seasons so that you can keep winter clothes in a separate room during summer and vice versa, so there’s more space to spread clothes out inside your closet.

3. Continuously Streamline

When was the last time you went through and purged clothing from your wardrobe?

Sometimes people think of this as a “Spring Cleaning” or once-a-year kind of task, but then it becomes more onerous and more tempting to put off.

A better strategy is to continuously streamline. Some people have a one-in, one-out policy, so that every time you buy something new, your wardrobe size stays the same. Or, you may make a goal to get rid of 1-2 items each and every week.

Today there are plenty of opportunities to donate gently used clothing – and you may even want to sell your old items online!

4. Special Shoe Storage

When it comes to closet organization, shoes can pose a unique problem. So many people find they end up with just a large pile of shoes on the floor.

A better strategy is to use cubbies or special shoe organizers so that there’s a designated spot for each pair. If you have high, hard to reach shelves, that could be an ideal place to store special occasion shoes in clearly labeled boxes.

5. Keep Experimenting!

If you’re new to organizing, here’s an important piece of advice: don’t worry if you don’t get it perfect the first time you try. Organizing is ideally a continually evolving process as your needs change and your try different strategies to see what will work best for you.

The important thing is to not give up and keep experimenting!

If you’re interested to experiment with a customized closet system for your home, our team here at Modular Closets will be happy to show you some new possibilities.
