Start 2019 with an Organized Closet!

1.3.2019

Many people love to dream up grand resolutions for New Year’s that soon fall by the wayside.  So, instead, maybe this year you can think more minimalist.  Now might be the best time to address your overstuffed closet and finally invest in a closet system and home organization plan that you can complete during the first few weeks of January and enjoy all year long!

Here at Modular Closets, we love helping people keep their New Year’s resolution to finally get organized.  We specialize in affordable custom storage solutions and quality closet systems that make home organization easy, so you can create a space that’s beautiful to live in.

If you’d like some simple tips to help you start off 2019 with a more organized home, here’s a step-by-step guide to getting your closet in order:

1. Take Everything Out of the Closet at Once

One of the most effective ways to purge is to set off a block of time when you can focus on the closet, and begin by taking everything – yes, everything – out at once.

Think of yourself as a closet curator: whatever you choose to put back in the closet must go back intentionally and for good reason. Better to have a carefully selected wardrobe of a few keys, quality pieces that you will definitely wear than a cluttered mess of items you never use.

2. Sort

Once you’ve removed everything, sort your items into piles that make sense.

You may want to divide your work clothes from your weekend wear and create different piles for skirts, slacks, blouses, t-shirts, shorts, etc. You may love your jeans, but the truth is you probably don’t need 20 pairs, especially if you only regularly wear 5 of them.  You may even want to come up with a number ahead of time for how many of each kind of clothing item you want to keep.

3. Keep, Toss, or Donate

As you’re sorting through your wardrobe, now is the time to make decisions about what you will keep and what you will discard.

Try to make a definite ‘yes or no’ decision for each item, no ‘maybes’.  If you haven’t worn that sweater in an over a year and have no definite plans to wear it in the future, now is the time to toss it.  If you have a pile of old college t-shirts that you’ve been holding onto for sentimental value (even though they don’t even fit anymore), then keep just one or two.

Everything you keep should make you feel confident, comfortable and authentically yourself right now – don’t hold on to those skinny jeans just because you’re hoping to lose 10 pounds someday. If/when you do lose the weight, you can treat yourself with new clothes – you will have earned it!  For now, don’t let it clutter your closet.

Keep just the clothes you love.  For everything else, see if it’s in a condition to be sold or donated. Otherwise, just throw it away.

4. Consider the Benefits of a Custom Closet System

By now, you should have a streamlined wardrobe made up of only beautiful items.  So why not put the best of them on display!

A custom closet system can give you the perfect blend of hanging rods, open shelves, and closed drawers for your closet so that getting dressed every morning will feel easy and luxurious.
