5 Things You Can Easily Get Rid of Right Now to Help you Declutter

5.29.2019

Does the very idea of decluttering fill you with a sense of dread, overwhelm, and anxiety? If so, know that you are not alone.

The good news is: decluttering can be easy.  In fact, there are probably several items taking up space in your closets right now that are quite simple for most everyone to quickly discard. And once you start freeing up some space in your closets, the whole decluttering process can become much easier

Here at Modular Closets, we’re passionate about helping homeowners finally clear up clutter and create beautifully organized living spaces. We specialize in offering custom storage solutions in addition to home organization tips.  Check out our modular approach to the custom closet for a high-quality plywood closet system that can be installed in your existing closet space.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to start decluttering, see if you can rid of any of these 5 types of common items right away today:

1. Leftover Hangers – Especially the Wire Hangers

“No wire hangers!”

Faye Dunaway’s famous line from the 1981 award-winning film Mommie Dearest has a ring of truth to it.

It’s easy to accumulate those thin, cheap wire hangers every time you go the dry cleaners.  But they’re not ideal for storing your clothing and keeping your wardrobe in good condition.  So especially if you have some extra ones lying around, see if you can donate them to a fun art project or otherwise just get rid of them.

2. One of a Pair

Some items come in pairs. Unfortunately, it can often be easy to lose just one.

If you have a lonely sock, shoe, glove, mitten etc. without a mate just taking up space in your closet, now is the time to let it go.

3. Broken Accessories

Do you have necklaces with broken clasps, sunglasses that are missing a lens, or an old worn-out leather belt?  Sometimes we hold on to items with the intention of getting around to repairing them someday….

Well, someday is today.  Make a decision to fix any broken accessory item today – otherwise, just pitch it in the trash.

4. Worn Out Undergarments

Bras, undershirts, underwear, and lingerie can wear out more quickly than other items of clothing.

It’s easy not to notice, especially as these items are often quickly folded and put away back in a drawer without careful inspection. So, today, go through your underwear drawer and dispose of any item that has seen better days.

5. Extra Buttons

Many sweaters and jackets come with an extra button. And if you’re like most people, you toss that button aside “just in case”…until you have a whole collection of random buttons.

Do you ever actually use those extra buttons?  Unless it’s a very special button for a very special item of clothing, now is the time to get rid of it.

Once you start decluttering, see if you can keep the momentum going!  If you feel inspired to clean out your closet and finally get organized for good with a custom closet system, our team here at Modular Closets will be happy to help.

We’d even like to offer you a free closet design. Just visit us online
