A Mudroom Makeover – How to Organize the Entryway to Your Home

10.22.2018

Your home probably has a beautiful front entrance -- maybe with a well-designed front porch, decorative front door, and a grand lighting fixture to greet new arrivals.  But if you’re like most homeowners, you probably only use that front entrance on special occasions. Typically, you and your family go in and out of the house from a side or back entrance, probably through a mudroom. And most mudrooms are a mess.

A mudroom typically becomes the catch-all area in a home, where outdoor clothes, school gear, work bags, shoes, sports equipment, and most everything else that gets brought in and out the house on a day-to-day basis gets left behind.  Chances are, your mudroom is a disorganized hodgepodge, which can make it hard to find just what you need when you’re running out the door.

Here at Modular Closets, we love to help people make their home more organized, so that life can feel easier, de-cluttered, and simplified.  You don’t need to trip over a pile of shoes when you come through the door ever again!  We’re happy to share these closet organization solutions that can help you to makeover your mudroom:

1. Open Shelves

If you want to make it as easy as possible for every member of your family to put away their things as they come through the door, add open shelves.

Make sure you have enough open storage to store several pairs of boots and shoes, as well as your collection of purses, bags, hats, gloves, and anything else you need to stash as you come in and then quickly grab as you go out.

Pro tip: to keep your open shelves looking tidy, add a few decorative baskets to stow away small items.

2. Drawers

It’s sad but true: if you don’t make storage easy, it will be all too likely that things will just end up on the floor. But if you add entryway closets or cabinets with closed drawers, it can be simple to keep your mudroom tidy.

Consider creating a dedicated drawer space for each member of your family, so everybody will know exactly where they should store away their things.

Pro tip: add a bench with drawers underneath to make it easy to change in and out of your outerwear and store things instantly.

3. Hanging Rods & Hooks

So many of the things we want to store in our mudroom ought to be hung up.  This is why introducing hanging rods and hooks into your mudroom can be such a gamechanger!

If you and/or others in your family like to play sports, it can be difficult to know where to store equipment like tennis rackets, baseball hats, or bike helmets.  Hooks and rods can make it easy to keep these things organized.  Similarly, outdoor items like jackets, bags, hats and even umbrellas can all be kept in order with hanging rods and hooks.
